P.S. 6, Eric Dutt Eco-Center
New York, NY

Construction is underway on what will become the first Green Roof atop a NYC Public School.  This roof top Science Center includes an intensive green roof with individual planting zones for each grade, a greenhouse classroom, solar panels, composting center, weather station, picnic area, outdoor classroom and turtle pond powered by a windmill.

The landscape areas will be divided into distinct plant analouges that will include; emergent species within the pond, drought tolerant grasses to simulate a meadow and bog species around the pond and dry stream-bed.  Students will cultivate vegetables and herbs from seed in the Greenhouse that will be transplanted into the raised planting beds for urban agriculture.

The Eric Dutt Eco Center will inspire faculty, students and their families toward scientific discovery and exploration of the natural world and serve as a model for the green roof opportunities available to schools.
