The Reconstruction of the Putnam Rail Trail
Bronx, New York

The Putnam Rail Trail, a former freight and passenger rail line, is currently a mile and a half long mixed use trail that bisects Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx, New York. The New York City Parks Department commissioned MKMLA to create a general use Greenway including linkages to an existing bike path system to the north and a proposed extension to the South.

Emphasis was placed on making the path accessible to all users, ecologically sensitive and respectful of the former rail site's historical context. A “naturalized” plaza, incorporating a series of historic granite pylons was also proposed. In addition, MKMLA was tasked with completing a master plan for the proposed southern extension of the path from Van Cortlandt Park to the Harlem River.

Project Area: 1 ½ miles
