  Fishers Island Recreational Path

Fishers Island is a bucolic summer resort off the coast of New London, Connecticut originally laid out by The Olmsted Brothers in the 1920’s. The most widely traveled road on the Island is East End Avenue providing  the only vehicular access to residences and amenities of the east end of the island. In keeping with the trend toward healthy exercise, East End Avenue needed to accommodate a steady increase of walkers, joggers and cyclists of all ages and this confluence of traffic has created safety concerns.

The project objectives were to provide a practical and economical recreational path which maximizes the safety of pedestrians on the East End of Fishers Island while protecting and enhancing the natural and rural character of Island. As the central circulation corridor runs through a number of Class I freshwater wetlands, our design was in accordance with the regulatory laws of the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Freshwater Wetland Acts.
