The new playground, created in partnership with Mayor Bloomberg's PlaNYC initiative and led by The Trust for Public Land transformed a parking lot into a vibrant playground and a much needed community resource.
The project included a 10 week participatory design process in which the students, school staff, and community stakeholders analyzed the site conditions, conducted a survey of program components and created models of alternative design solutions. This egalitarian process resulted in a design which features an artificial turf field, running track, innovative play equipment which incorporates a live tree for shade, outdoor classroom, vegetable/flower gardens, shade trees, benches, painted games and drinking fountain.
