Grand Central Parkway - 94th Street Interchange
Queens, New York
This urban design and engineering project covers approximately 58 acres along the Grand Central Parkway corridor in Queens, NY. The project area lies directly adjacent to LaGuardia Airport and thus serves as a gateway to New York City as well as several local tourist destinations in the immediate vicinity; including the USTA Tennis Center, the new Citi-Field (formerly Shea Stadium) and Flushing Meadows Corona Park. The scope of work includes the reconstruction/repaving of 1900 meters of roadways, reconstruction of 1 bridge structure, 490 linear meters of retaining walls and 700 meters of noise walls. MKMLA was responsible for the design of the architectural treatments for the project as well as tree preservation and landscape restoration plans.
The project required an extensive landscape design effort that not only reflects the character of the Parkway but also introduces a sustainable planting scheme that includes no- mow meadows and plant massing to reduce maintenance. Our In-House Arborist assisted in the preparation of tree preservation plans and landscape restoration strategies that meet both NYSDOT and NYCDOT requirements.
Project Area: 58 acres
Budget: Infrastructure - $56 Million, Landscape - $1.7 Million
Client: New York State Department of Transportation
