Roosevelt Island - Southpoint Park
Conceptual Master Plan
New York, New York
Southpoint Park is an undeveloped waterfront property at the Southern tip of Roosevelt Island. Located just northeast of the United Nations in the middle of the East River, Southpoint Park is home to two existing land marked structures; the Strecker Laboratory and the Smallpox Hospital Ruin designed by James Renwick. The Trust for Public Land selected MKMLA to provide the vision for a dynamic new public park which would create a new public park that resonates with the spectacular island site, its landmark ruins and landforms, as well as the egalitarian and multi-cultural promise of providing a new purpose for Roosevelt Island.
The programmatic elements included the enhancement of the shoreline, the wild and natural landscape and the ecology of the site for the communal enrichment of the Island community. Use architecture and landforms of the site to create performance venues and environmental art that will attract large numbers of visitors from the rest of the world.
